Winners of Children’s Garden Name and Design Contest

Immediate Release April 25, 2009

From Nancy Jones, Alta Vista Garden Volunteer & Children’s Garden Activities Coordinator.

The contest was conceived last year by the AV Children’s Garden Committee to promote the development of the Children’s Garden and gather name and design input from children. From the contest entry form:

  • What would you like to call this Garden?
  • What would you like to play with, see, or learn about in this Garden?
  • Now draw a picture showing a special place you would like to have in the Garden.
  • Think of plants, things to learn from, and things to play on that you would not find anywhere else. Judging will be weighted toward unique design concepts.

250 entries were received from children living in Vista and Oceanside during February and a panel of 10 judges chose the winners in March. Winners attend Alamosa Park, Foothill Oak, Lake, and home school. VAPA, Casita and North Star students also submitted entries. Parents of all winners signed releases for internet, photograph and newspaper publicity; copies of releases are available on request.

Our judges were very impressed by the creativity and variety of the contest entries. We will be using the participants’ ideas over the years as we develop the Children's Garden. Each entry had at least one good suggestion if not more and taken all together with the differing points of view we have a wealth of material for a wondrous children's garden. The AVG Board hopes to use the imagination and creativity of the young participants as exhibited in their ideas over a long period of time taking a little from each of them. We are so pleased so many of our youth and so many schools actually participated in the contest. We hope to have them as friends to our garden for many, many years to come!

Alta Vista Children’s Garden Name and Design Contest winners were announced at 1 p.m. on April 25, 2009 at the Earth Day Festival. These winners will also be recognized with certificates at the Vista City Council meeting on May 12, 2009, at 5:30 p.m.

Grand Prize winners received family tickets to LegoLand; first place grade level winners received a pair of WAVE Waterpark passes. Inscribed medallions for Alta Vista Gardens Earth Day 2009 were also presented to all winners.

One surprising result of the judging was a tie in the kindergarten designs: the winners are twins who are participants in the Vista Garden Club Junior Gardeners class. Another surprise was when the judges chose three winners with unique designs from the same family, the Kelley children from Oceanside who are home-schooled.

Imagination and Creativity: Children Are Our Inspirations

By Nancy Jones, volunteer AVCG April 28, 2009

Dreams, magic and peace were recurring themes of the entries for the Alta Vista Children’s Garden Name and Design Contest held in February and March. The nine winners were announced at the Alta Vista Gardens Earth Day Festival on Saturday April 25, with students receiving LegoLand or WAVE Waterpark passes. Visitors to the Festival were invited to peruse and enjoy three notebooks full of the ideas and dreams children have for the new Garden. Fanciful features and practical places were included in the 250 entries from nine schools in Vista and Oceanside. Foothill Oak Elementary in Vista submitted a total of 100 entries to win a $100 Lowe’s gift card for their school garden.

Fitting in with Haley Lindsay’s winning Name chosen for Phase I of the Children’s Garden, many students chose to include Bugs, Birds and Butterflies in their designs. Joel Acosta’s winning Design was a butterfly-shaped garden with ponds. Other students envisioned huge grasshoppers, ladybugs and snakes as sculptures and play structures. Some entrants drew wild animals, caterpillars and worms in their renditions of the ideal garden. Students expect to find sensory gardens where smelling, touching and tasting the plants are encouraged. Growing plants like sunflowers, roses and geraniums as well as apple, orange and cherry trees were integral features in many plans. The chance to plant, grow and eat herbs, veggies and berries was important for many children. The garden should be an educational wonderland with composts, worm bins and incredible edibles.

Dreaming about the gardens, children took amazing flights of fantasy to make volcano, circus, Mother Goose, reptile and octopus garden plans. Name suggestions included Eden, Sunrise, Sunshine and Rainbow Gardens. Students look forward to explorations in treehouses, windmills and mazes. After long discussions at gardening clubs, students were inspired to include such practical features as resting walls, buffets and bathrooms, as well as hills, pathways and hidden corners to discover. Children expect to be able to climb, explore and even hide as they discover the garden. The narratives provided by some students and their choices of features showed that these children care about our world and are ready to help keep Mother Earth a safe and beautiful place to live.

As the judges examined the walls covered with entries in March, the Garden House Boardroom filled with murmurs of appreciation for the bright colors, unique designs and flights of fancy the children created. Alta Vista Gardens now has a young group of friends who have provided a wealth of material for a wondrous children's garden that will inspire the development of the Children’s Garden for years to come.
